My name is Siavash but I go with Sia. I am a master's prepared registered nurse, clinical nurse leader and public health
nurse, currently pursuing Doctor of Nursing Practice-Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at University of San Francisco.
As I continue my Doctoral and Nurse Practitioner studies at USF,
I am excited to undertake evidence-based studies and practices that would enable me to provide high quality, patient-centered care.
I hope this blog helps me and my colleagues around the world to become more aware of current environmental and occupational
health topics and issues and together help to address some of those shortcomings.

Blog #22: Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

The Safety Data Sheets (SDS) can be helpful in communicating information regarding hazardous chemicals. The information presented in English can include, the properties of each chemical, the physical, health, and environmental health hazards, the protective measures, and safety precautions for handling, storing, and transporting the chemical. It can have as many as 16 sections covering different information that can be useful and important. While SDS can be effective, it certainly can be hard to understand and follow initially. Therefore, effective training would be needed to better understand the information provided and to apply that information in the workplace to protect against chemical hazards . It is also hoped that SDS be written in simple English and translated to common languages (i.e., Spanish) to maximize their utilization.

Environmental Health News Article #11

This week, I came across an interesting article on EHN.org called “Snow in Texas and ice in Alabama? Unusual cold weather could become more common.” This was interesting since my friend and I had a conversation the other day about climate change and this article seemed to be timed perfectly for that. The article talks about how this week, temperatures are expected to hit historic lows across much of North America, with Texas snowing and Tennessee freezing, and hundreds of other towns and cities preparing for icy cold weather. However, the article mentions that despite the cold, on average, it still is warmer than it used to be due to arctic winds getting warmer and jet streams changing. This aligns with some scientists’ beliefs that the frequency and intensity of cold weather may be changing as the planet warms. I recommend checking out this article, especially for those into climate change articles.

Environmental Health News Article #7

This week, I found an interesting article on ehn.org called “Driven by Flint water crisis, EPA issues new rule to tackle lead in drinking water.”    I nspired by the  water crisis in Flint, Michigan , EPA   recently announced one of the biggest efforts in decades to reduce the exposure to lead from drinking water around the country. Drinking system is considered one of the main exposures to lead in people across the country. This new rule is hoped to help address this problem by mandating complete removal of the corrosive pipes (which have high risks of releasing lead), requiring testing for all schools and daycare facilities, and requiring all water systems to use the same procedures to test tap water for lead and  n otify people  within 24 hours if the level exceeds 15 parts per billion .
